The petroleum industry is cost-sensitive and demands high levels of technical skills from its geosciences staff. As a result, the employers in this industry now regard the minimum entry requirement to be a higher degree. The Alexandria Petroleum Geology Program (APGP) is the first specialized program all over the Faculties of Sciences in Egypt, which started at 2007. The overall aim of APGP is to provide a full training in integrated petroleum geosciences. This is an ambitious program and aims to produce graduates of diverse backgrounds to satisfy the increasing demands of the oil and gas markets not only in Egypt, but also in the Arab World, Africa and the Far East.

Vision

The APGP is committed to maintain its prominent position in the academic community through high quality education and research in petroleum geosciences and will be the leading university center of education and research in the Middle East and abroad. The APGP is dedicated to serve the regional and national demands for well prepared graduates who are highly valued by employers and the community, and who are qualified to pursue advanced degrees.

Mission

The APGP at the Faculty of Science aims to advance new understandings of the petroleum geosciences, to prepare all graduates for thoughtful, life-long participation in issues related to petroleum geosciences, technology, and society and to prepare a new generation of petroleum geoscientists who are capable of confronting the needs and expectations of oil and gas industries and stakeholders.

Program overview

Bachelor degree in Petroleum Geology requires the students to successfully complete 132 credit hours including:

University general requirements: 10 credit hours,

Faculty requirements: 25 credit hours,

Specialization compulsory courses: 60 credit hours,

Specialization elective courses: 32 credit hours, and

Free elective courses: 5 credit hours.

Topics covered

Petroleum geology is the study of origin, occurrence, movement, accumulation, and exploration of hydrocarbons. It refers to the specific set of geological disciplines that are applied during this exploration. Petroleum geology is principally concerned with the evaluation of seven key elements in sedimentary basins, including: sources, reservoirs, seals, traps, timing, maturation and migration. Several major sub-disciplines exist in petroleum geology specifically to study these seven key elements such as: analysis of source rocks, basin analysis, exploration stage, appraisal stage, production stage and analysis of reservoir.

Though the wide-ranging technical content means the course is intensive, we do not neglect the need to enhance the inter-personal skills that are of such crucial importance in this industry today such as working in a team and computer skills. Supportive and friendly atmosphere, social events and geologic field trips are a valuable part of this.

Why is this program unique?

We are working to build a geoscience community of students and staff who excel through collaborative pursuit in teaching and research, leading to the creation of academic opportunities for the program. Also, we are fortunate to have many industry and government partners who support our students in numerous ways, and we are always open to establish new relationships. Our experience and connections can help secure that all-important first step on the ladder to a successful career. More than 70 % of our graduates enter directly into good jobs and research posts within six months after graduation.

Moreover, a team from the first group of the program graduates was succeeded in the 2012 AAPG Imperial Barrel Award (IBA) completion and ranked as the first on the African Nations and a fourth team in the global competition in the United States of America. Also, another team from the second group of the program graduates was succeeded in the 2013 AAPG Imperial Barrel Award (IBA) completion and ranked as the first on the North African Nations. Whereas the team of the third group of the program graduates was succeeded in the 2014 IBA completion and ranked as the first on Egypt and the second on the North African Nations.

How to apply

Admission requirements:

Students are nominated for admission to the Faculty according to the general admission requirements of the Faculty of Science, Alexandria University, under the umbrella of the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education. Students must hold a certificate accepted by the supreme Council of Egyptian Universities. All applications must fulfill the requirements of the desire major and submit all official credentials upon acceptance.

Registration Procedures:

Students are required to register at the beginning of the first academic year during the assigned registration period. Registration takes place in the student affairs office (El Shatby Building). The registration office issues a regulation bulletin as well as the procedures to be followed. Full-time study is a requirement for all students. Each student in the program should be submitted for medical examination before the expiration of a period of 14 days from the beginning of the first academic year.

Tuition fees:

All tuition fees are payable in full, for the academic semester to which they relate, on registration. Examination fees will normally be included in the semester tuition fees. A student shall not normally be eligible on examination unless the appropriate fee has been paid to the Faculty at the due time.

Student Health:

It is advisable for the students to enroll in a health insurance program. Currently, the Faculty offers a health insurance program in collaboration with the University Hospital. Students interested should contact the Student Affairs Office.

Language of Acquisition

English is the medium of instruction. All students are expected to demonstrate an acceptable level of English proficiency both in oral and written communication skills. Students with deficiencies will have to take remedial English courses.

Activities

The student can participate in several scientific, social and entertainment activities taking place at the Geology Department and the Faculty. This is achieved through participation in different student chapters, associations and other teams that help in the organization of conferences, meetings and other extracurricular activities (e.g., field trips, sports, arts, entertaining trips, scout’s camps) organized by the Department and the Faculty.

Students’ Academic Support

We aim to make sure from the start that you have access to any support you might need from people who are easy to contact and who can give you friendly and expert guidance.
